Intimate voices in a world transformed
Inhale.Circulate.Enchant and Operate were created during the same period and released one week apart as companion albums. Their songs share a thematic and emotional world shaped by the coronavirus pandemic. Grief and anxiety, illness, mourning and isolation resonate through music of unusual depth and complexity, not as a fixed programme but as an atmosphere that colours every track.
Every song includes vocals, yet the voice takes on a new role. Michael Keuth developed a quieter, more intimate and distant way of singing, allowing it to blend into the arrangements rather than stand above them. This restrained delivery deepens the sense of inwardness and makes the human presence feel both close and strangely displaced.
The lyrics continue The Modular Beat's move away from conventional narrative song forms. Fragmentary, associative and deliberately elusive, they create open spaces from isolated images, unexpected combinations of words and recurring motifs. Like the music, the language generates atmosphere and movement without prescribing a single interpretation.
Connection and separation, closeness and distance, orientation and loss form a central tension. The lyrical figures move through a world whose rules have become uncertain; memories, perceptions and thoughts overlap in a state of continual change. The result feels less like a linear account than an unfolding stream of consciousness.
Images of sun, oceans, earth and colour act as emotional coordinates rather than literal landscapes. They suggest transformation, hope, movement and uncertainty while remaining as fleeting as moments in a dream. The outer world and inner life become almost impossible to distinguish.
Unusual syntax, incomplete phrases and apparently contradictory images shift attention from grammatical certainty to rhythm, repetition and association. Meaning is carried by sound and emotional resonance. The texts become fragments of an inner dialogue that reassemble differently with every listen, extending the albums' experimental language into words.
