Nomask

Two phases, one changing shape

Nomask is the twelfth release by The Modular Beat. Recorded at Dennis Klein’s home, it combines electronics with electric and acoustic guitars, bass, cello, quiet vocals and programmed drums. Its melancholic, psychedelic atmosphere reflects the long period over which the material was created.

The album emerged in two distinct phases. The earlier recordings are expansive, psychedelic and experimental, allowing passages to stretch out and vocals to become deliberately chaotic. The later material is more focused and groove-oriented, with clearer structures and a stronger rhythmic centre. Rather than smoothing over that contrast, Nomask brings both approaches together.

This dual character gives the album its particular energy. Raw gestures and open-ended sections sit beside more economical arrangements. The electronic framework is repeatedly unsettled by the physical presence of guitar, bass and cello, while the quieter voice provides an introspective counterweight. The result documents a project in transition without disguising the different stages of that movement.

The lyrics share an associative, fragmentary language. Instead of conventional narrative, they use natural motifs such as water, forests, leaves and rain as mirrors of inner states. Dreamlike and surreal images create atmosphere more readily than fixed meaning, while repeated phrases become part of the music itself.

Identity, perception and change remain central. The texts are melancholic and inward-looking, but their open imagery allows several meanings to coexist. In comparison with Michael Keuth’s later lyrics for Lost Frequency Array, they feel more spontaneous and raw, while already containing many of the stylistic elements that would continue to shape his writing.

A companion book of lyrics and images by Dennis Klein and Michael Keuth was created alongside the release, extending the album’s fragmentary visual and poetic language beyond the recordings.
